La storia della grande n, passo dopo passo [archivio]

Whether fighting for the rights of artists and songwriters, launching the Walden Woods Project to protect the land and legacy of Henry David Thoreau or soldiering on with his fractious musical brethren the Eagles, community has long been a cornerstone of his life and art and it provides the foundation for his new album Cass County.

They are authentic people who come from rural America.

With Cass CountyHenley is looking to spotlight the Texas community he was raised in and pay homage to the music that shaped his youth. Long before Henley left Texas to seek musical fame and fortune in California, he spent a lot of time soaking up the Great American Songbook courtesy of his parents and grandparents, who listened to the songs of Stephen Foster, Big Band stars like Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo and the Dorsey brothers and, of course, country music.

The list goes on and on. Henley is proud of the Texas region he calls home and the music that resonated throughout.

I go there to pick up the vibe. The first black female aviator was born in my hometown. Nat Stuckey was from Cass County. Henley left his Texas roots in and moved to California where fellow Texan Kenny Rogers produced an album on his early band, Shiloh. The years since have been well documented. Not that country music is supposed to be an intellectual exercise, but it could be better than it is.

But he did that, in order to get his voice up to where he wanted it, and he sounded great. He also recorded in Dallas, where he now lives with his wife and three teenage children. He and George Jones and Buck Owens were influences for me. Recording with Haggard was a bucket list moment for Henley.

I know Merle was in trouble when he was younger. You never hear anybody talk about that. That was his idea. Henley also has deep appreciation for Lynch. You have to feel comfortable, safe and secure. We have these great talks about life.

Top Ten False Teachers You’ll Find in Evangelical Churches

The bar is not very high right now. It could have more meat to it than it has currently got. Radio has to stop pandering to demographics. Henley has a home outside Dallas, but his retreat is a acre farm outside Linden.

I see the things that I love about the place, but I also see the things that drove me away from it. I think small towns are a microcosm for America. I love my country. I want to help my country, but my country also really disappoints me and makes me angry and frustrated sometimes. Fame, at one time, was associated with accomplishment, but in this day and age fame and notoriety have become confused. A lot of people who we call famous, should not be famous. I think there were values imparted to children that are missing as we become a more urbanized society.

Rural life is suffering and working-class people are suffering. Farms are disappearing right and left and you can hear it in the music.

Henley will be sharing music from Cass County during a solo tour that kicks off October 3rd in Phoenix and continues through mid-November.

After a winter concert in Syracuse, New York, I met with Shelley to discuss how she had found her voice as a singer-songwriter. Thinking back, is there particular music from your childhood that is clearly present in your style today?

I heard hooks all the time. I just acquired the songs I liked and never followed artists. Was any variety of folk in the mix? It was, with my mom. But she did play Van Morrison and a lot of Irish folk music, so that was in my early brain. That was like homecoming. Did you have a specific awakening to Appalachian mountain music? It was coming back to Kentucky [after living in Georgia].

The AEM Infinity Review

Together we started learning more and more of the heritage of that area. After I got into banjo music, I just decided to follow the strain of the ballads.

And that tied in with Sandy Denny and Anne Briggs and June Tabor—those stark, haunting, floating ballads that could last forever. Could you hear the connections between the Appalachian and British Isles music? Yeah, same songs, different words, and bent from having been stuck in a holler. Definitely isolation caused the different sounds and the regionalism that makes the music so beautiful and attractive. You started writing very early, right? A cappella pop songs—essentially what I was writing then was regurgitated from what I heard on the radio.

When did guitar come into the picture? I was a freshman in high school, and my mom had a guitar up in the attic and a chord chart on the wall. I sat up there and tried to learn, and immediately I wrote a song that first day when I figured out C, G, and D. It was just a way to write more stuff, another vehicle. So the guitar became part of my machine. It makes sense that you started off just singing, because melody feels like the heart of your songs. Is that right?

Arrangement follows melody and words slide into the melody. Your guitar parts are melodic, too, especially on the new album. I needed a new way to write songs, because all my other ways had escaped me. You know, you have to have tricks. Do your new songs use a lot of alternate tunings? Onstage your National sounded like it was in open D.

I like singing in a lot of flat keys, so that just works. Nathan actually tunes a half step down, too, for a different reason.

His father, a Jewish dry goods merchant, had emigrated from Hungary in His was the only Jewish family in the town; Sales joked that local Ku Klux Klan members bought the sheets used for their robes from his father's store. Sales got his nickname from his family. His older brothers had been nicknamed "Ham Bone" and "Chicken Bone.

When he became a disc jockey, he began using the stage name Soupy Hines. After he became established, it was decided that "Hines" was too close to the Heinz soup company, so he chose Sales, in part after vaudeville comedian Chic Sale.

He sometimes entertained his shipmates by telling jokes and playing crazy characters over the ship's public address system. One of the characters he created was "White Fang", a large dog that played outrageous practical jokes on the seamen.

Sales enrolled at Marshall Collegewhere he earned a master's degree in journalism. While at Marshall, he performed in nightclubs as a comedian, singer and dancer. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio inwhere he worked as a morning radio DJ and performed in nightclubs.

Sales is best known for his daily children's television show, Lunch with Soupy Sales. Sales developed pie-throwing into an art form: straight to the face, on top of the head, a pie to both ears from behind, moving into a stationary pie, and countless other variations.

He claimed that he and his visitors had been hit by more than 20, pies during his career. Sales occasionally took the studio cameras to the lawn of the Detroit Public Librarylocated across the street from the TV studios, and talked with local students walking to and from school.

Beginning no later than July 4,a Saturday version of Sales' lunch show was broadcast nationally on the ABC television network. Sales believed that his show helped sustain jazz in Detroit, as artists would regularly sell out their nightclub shows after appearing on Soup's On. Sales briefly had a third dinner time show filmed largely in the Palmer Park section of Detroit. One of his character puppets was Willy the Worm, a "balloon" propelled worm that emerged from its house and used a high pitched voice to announce birthdays or special events on the noontime show; but the character never appeared when Soupy moved to Los Angeles.

In his lunchtime show, Sales always wore an orlon fabric sweater. In many of his shows, he appeared in costume, performed his dance, the Soupy Shuffleintroduced many characters such as Nicky Nooney, the Mississippi Gambler, etc. The show briefly went back on the ABC network as a late night fill-in for The Steve Allen Show in but was canceled after three months. All of the puppets on the show during its Los Angeles run were also operated by Clyde Adler.By Anthony Joseph for MailOnline.
